How To Live In A Van (And Do What You Love)
How Latino Outdoors is Removing Barriers and Connecting Communities
Before we talk about how to manual, let’s discuss what a manual is. Frequently confused with a wheelie, a manual involves balancing on the rear wheel of your bicycle using only your body weight and brakes to stay upright. It differs from a wheelie in that a wheelie uses the force of pedaling to lift the front wheel and keep it up.

It’s daylight savings time, which means more night time rides. So turn back your clocks and join Macky & Syd as they take full advantage of how early it gets dark. Packed with their Gemini Lights it’s time to get in some fun night rides.
On Sunday night in the United States (except Arizona), we will all set our clocks back one hour. We get an extra hour of sleep on one night, but pay a hefty price for it over the next four months with cold mornings and early sunsets. I may be biased, but as you can tell I’m not a big fan of fewer daylight hours and early sunsets. On the flip side, evenings are still reasonably warm or pleasantly brisk right now, meaning it’s a great time to strap on some lights and ride at night!
Syd Schulz is a professional enduro racer. She also writes for fun and really enjoys burritos.

Since we got back from South America in early April, Syd and I have been living in Great White the Adventure Van, our 1998 Ford E-250 cargo van. She’s old, with lots of miles (183,000) and plenty of rust, but she runs and has taken us to some cool places! For those of you who are into van life (and admit it, who isn’t?), here are some detail shots and a video tour so you can see what our setup looks like.
Vittoria rider Syd Schulz is a New Mexico and loves to ride the Angel Fire Bike Park, the second stop of the 2016 SCOTT Enduro Cup by Vittoria. Above you can ride with Syd as she previews the course.

Badass!

Macky Franklin & Syd Schulz are the dynamic duo that ride for Jamis/Vittoria and travel the world racing the Enduro World Cup Series. Some people think the discipline of enduro is all about the downhill and requires little pedaling, while others believe it’s all about the uphill section. Whatever side you’re on, we can tell you Macky & Syd rely on Stages Power to increase their efficiency when training to win.
After racing the Andes-Pacifico Enduro in Santiago, Syd and I headed farther south and spent a month training in Nevados de Chillan, Chile until the first round of the Enduro World Series.

There are good trails everywhere these days. But some places are different — so unique, so distinct from the type of mountain biking you’re used to that they draw you in with a sort of magnetic pull. Nevados de Chillan, Chile is one of those places.

First race of the season – in Santiago, Chile!
The days leading up to our trip to Chile were full of lists: lists of to-do items (“suspend Verizon service”, “build race bikes”, “freeze car registration”), lists of things to pack (“tripod”, “spare goggles”, “shampoo and conditioner”), lists of packages we were praying would arrive before we left (“MRP guides”, “TRX suspension trainer”, “Seasucker bike racks”). There were some close calls, like how we had to…
Enduro racers and lifestyle proponents Macky Franklin and Syd Schulz have just signed a contract with Jamis Bicycles for 2016. Not purely down to speed and podium positions, the couple also represent a lifestyle that couldn’t be better suited to the US bike market according to Jamis. It’s refreshing to see that sometimes success is not measured solely by victories!
Happy New Year! Now that it’s 2016, I have some exciting news that I can finally share.

As a mountain bike racer, winter can be hard. It’s cold and wet, but training continues to be extremely important as the base you build in the winter has a big impact on how you perform during the season. Over the years I’ve figured out some tricks to make winter training more bearable (even fun). So here you go:
Here’s my list of hydration pack tool kit essentials.
Tucked away in the northeast corner of New Mexico is an area known as the Enchanted Circle. Within this area are two of New Mexico’s primary mountain bike destinations, Taos and Angel Fire.
Tucked in the north-eastern corner of New Mexico is an area known as the Enchanted Circle. Within this area are two of New Mexico’s primary mountain bike destinations, Taos and Angel Fire. Connecting these two towns is the must-ride trail of the area, South Boundary. I grew up in Taos and many of my early mountain bike adventures were on the South Boundary Trail — cracked helmets, finishing my rides in the dark, getting stuck above tree line in lightning storms. These were the moments that taught me to respect and love the sport of mountain biking. Although I have now been racing professionally for almost 10 years, I continue to return to this trail for new adventures, new challenges and a renewed appreciation for the sport I love.
We spent a long weekend exploring the spectacular singletrack on the Hopewell Lake section of the Continental Divide Trail.

Mountain bike couple Macky Franklin and Syd Schulz have never been that into Valentine’s day. Why spend money on roses and chocolate when you really just need new brake rotors? And why waste time on candlelit dinners when you could be spending the afternoon ripping down pristine New Zealand singletrack? This video is their ideal date – a little romance and a lot of shred, kneepads and roses.
